took the bait. they delivered a counter proposal to president obama's plan to avert the fiscal cliff. guess what, the white house rejected it, calling the gop proposal unbalanced and not serious. translation? no tax hikes on the wealthy so democrats said forget about it. we thought you should take a look. it totals $2.2 trillion in deficit reduction over ten years. the part that stood out to us was $600 billion in proposed savings in medicare reforms. how? in part by raising the age of eligibility to 65 to maybe 67. turning down the gop proposal, dan pfieffer said, quote, it provides no details on which deductions they would eliminate, which loopholes they will close or which medicare savings they would achieve." let's head now to the white house and dan lothian. the white house will not offer a counter proposal, right? what's going on here? >> reporter: well, you know, i think the white house is digging in. the president said early on in this process that he would only sit down and really move forward, negotiate on this in any meaningful way if the tax hikes for the wealthy expired.

the raid that killed osama bin laden. president obama paid tribute to the fallen s.e.a.l. saying quote, he gave his life for his fellow americans, end quote. chris lawrence is at the pentagon right now with home run on this mission. first of all, i think, chris, a lot of people didn't even know there was a doctor who had been kidnapped and needed rescuing. what's the story behind this? >> and that's not all that unusual. a lot of times, they will not publicize a kidnapping while they are still sorting out the particulars or trying to ascertain whether they might launch a rescue mission. it often does more harm than good to put it out there and put the details out there. so that's not all that unusual. in this case, the doctor was working for morning star. a non-profit agency. he was with two local afghan, i believe at least one of them was a doctor as well, and they were coming back from a rural medical clinic east of kabul when armed men basically stopped their vehicle and kidnapped them. they then took them to a camp about 50 miles from the pakistani border and over the next fe

. president obama is taking this sort of outside strategy where as we saw him last week he goes outside of washington. he'll be giving remarks to the business roundtable this week, meeting with business leaders tomorrow. other stakeholders this week and he's trying to kind of put some pressure on congress and learn from a mistake that he made you might say during say the debt ceiling negotiations where you saw these meetings with congressional leaders but there really wasn't a whole lot of payoff and didn't make the president look particularly effective. an issue to be resolved is to tackle entitlement reform. you have the white house and republicans saying you need to put meat on the bones and going back and forth. listen to what republican senator bob corker said. >> i think the really discussions around the fiscal cliff haven't even begun to be serious yet and the reason they haven't is we have really not begun to talk about real entitlement reforms and the only way of a true avoidance and until the debate moves to that point there's really no serious debate taking place and
